Successful online grocery store powered by Shopware

Handokmall

HanDok Kaufcenter GmbH has been importing and selling Korean food since 1995 at two locations in and around Frankfurt. With its first own online shop, the family-owned business made its popular K-food assortment accessible beyond the region and attracted customers far beyond Germany.

Relaunch for an authentic Asian lifestyle experience

Challenge: Unifying UX, multilingual content, and efficient processes

The existing Handokmall online shop could no longer keep pace with the growing interest in Korean food across Europe, either technically or in terms of design. Long loading times, an unclear structure, and differing cultural design expectations led to disorientation for users and increased cart abandonment.

The goal was to create a high-performance, multilingual online shop that conveys an authentic sense of Korean lifestyle while meeting European user expectations.

SEAMLESS INTEGRATION OF ALL TOUCHPOINTS

End-to-end customer journey from initial interest to dealer inquiry

The close integration of product data management, configurator, and automated lead routing creates a consistent user experience across all touchpoints. Prospective customers are guided intuitively through the product world, can configure their selection individually, and submit their inquiry directly to the right retail partner. This turns digital interest into a qualified sales opportunity – efficient, transparent, and seamlessly embedded in existing processes.

UX, design & scalable Shopware 6 architecture

As part of the relaunch, a new interculturally aligned UX/UI concept was developed based on Shopware 6. The goal was an online shop that authentically conveys the Korean lifestyle while meeting European user expectations.

The modern Shopware 6 architecture delivers high performance, fast loading times, and flexible extensibility. A clear information structure, mobile‑first approach, and optimized navigation create an intuitive customer journey and strengthen both brand perception and conversion.

Multilingual support & custom Shopware extensions

Because Korean was defined as the primary shop language, Shopware 6’s standard language features were not sufficient. Through custom extensions and a specially developed plug‑in, Korean, German, and English now run reliably and error‑free across the entire system – including checkout and all extensions.

This resulted in an internationally oriented food online shop with a consistent user experience across diverse target groups.

Automation & process optimization in the Shopware system

In addition to UX and internationalization, internal workflows in Shopware 6 were systematically automated. Custom developments now streamline picking, shipping to over 34 countries, shipping cost calculation, and cart logic such as upselling or automatically adding ice packs for chilled products.

The result: significantly reduced manual effort, more efficient logistics and back-office workflows, and a scalable e-commerce infrastructure.

SUCCESSFUL RELAUNCH ON A SHOPWARE 6 FOUNDATION

Results & added value

Thanks to the power of Shopware 6 combined with custom extensions, a modern K‑food online shop was created that delivered tangible results within a short time.

The clean, brand-consistent design boosts recognition and enables intuitive user guidance. At the same time, internal operations benefit: frontend and backend are significantly easier to use, loading times have been noticeably reduced, and key processes have been simplified through custom development.

In this way, the relaunch combines higher user adoption with sustainable process optimization in day-to-day operations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED – CLEARLY ANSWERED

FAQ on the Shopware 6 relaunch for Handokmall

Why was the online food shop migrated to Shopware 6?

The previous shop system could no longer reliably deliver the required performance, multilingual support, and scalability. With Shopware 6, Handokmall gained a modern, API‑based e‑commerce platform that offers fast loading times, flexible extensions, and a robust technical foundation for international growth.

How has multilingual support been implemented in the Shopware 6 system?

Because Korean was defined as the primary shop language, custom adaptations were required. With specially developed extensions and plug‑ins, Korean, German, and English now work consistently across the entire system – including checkout and third‑party extensions. The result is an internationally oriented, multilingual online grocery shop.

What benefits did UX optimisation bring to the K-Food online shop?

A new, interculturally aligned UX/UI concept combines authentic Korean design with European user habits. Clear structure, optimized navigation, and a mobile‑first approach enhance the user experience and demonstrably contribute to higher conversion rates.

How does Shopware 6 support the automation of e-commerce processes?

Through custom development within Shopware 6, core workflows such as shipping cost calculation, international logistics, cart logic, and picking processes were automated. This cuts manual effort, accelerates internal operations, and provides a scalable infrastructure for continued growth in online grocery retail.
