What hosting options does Piwik PRO offer?

The Piwik PRO hosting offers differ depending on the version selected. In the free Core plan of Piwik PRO, the hosting option is set to cloud hosting with a German server location. There are several hosting options to choose from for the Enterprise plan. Here you can choose between cloud hosting, private cloud hosting or on-premises provision.

How does Piwik PRO's cookieless tracking work?

In contrast to tracking with cookies, so-called cookieless tracking enables data protection-compliant user analysis and collects data even if the use of cookies has been objected to.

Data on website visits and general traffic can also be generated without cookies. A browser fingerprint can be used to collect data about users or their devices, even if cookies have been deleted or not allowed. Fingerprinting recognizes returning users by collecting similar patterns of information and linking them together. In contrast to cookie tracking, no visitor metrics are required for this.

Why is Piwik PRO a good alternative to GA4?

Piwik PRO and Google Analytics 4 (GA4) are web analytics platforms with extensive functions and a good choice for experienced analytics users. However, in addition to some similarities, the applications differ in key respects.

Processing & hosting

In contrast to Google Analytics, which uses the collected information for its own purposes, Piwik Pro's data sovereignty lies exclusively with the website operator. Various opt-in and anonymization tools ensure compliance with data protection regulations such as the GDPR.

With Piwik PRO, the collected data is hosted either in the cloud or locally in the company environment. Depending on the version used, the server location can be freely selected. With Google Analytics, hosting is determined by Google and takes place via servers located in the USA.

Tracking & use of cookies

GA4 uses user-based tracking and records interactions throughout the entire user journey. When handling cookies, Google has relied on first party cookies since GA4, without being dependent on third party cookies.

Piwik Pro works with a cookie-free tracking method called fingerprinting. In contrast to GA4, visitor data remains anonymous during tracking without any gaps being created. If visitors consent to the collection of their personal data, Piwik Pro can track activities across different devices and import information from other databases.
